Great Island Residence

Great Island, MA

This family summer residence, formerly the site of a historical family home, is built on an island nestled in Cape Cod. Purchased by the current resident’s grandfather during the Great Depression, it is situated in a cedar grove along a causeway that leads to the larger Cape. With a sweeping, panoramic view of the water to one side and a dense cedar forest to the other, this home is a secluded and remote retreat for meditative reticence or lively family gatherings.

The home honors the history of the former building and the land that surrounds it while imbuing the site with cross-generational memories of the residents. In this sense, it is a structure that respects tradition and evolution, the gradual intersections that mark family growth, land and water, and the passage of day into night. The challenge is to respect this heritage while at the same time reinterpreting what a cottage can mean and be in contemporary times.
