Tribeca Loft

New York, NY

A nineteenth century pipe manufacturing and storage facility forms the backdrop for this ninety-foot deep by forty-five-foot wide loft in Tribeca. Raw space is demarcated by rough masonry walls around the perimeter, with seven oversized cast-iron columns lined up through its center, supporting the heavy timber framing above. Arched windows on the front façade provide panoramic views of mature trees and serve as the primary source of daylight, which quickly falls off as one moves toward the rear of the loft.

Domesticating this space compels contrasting strategies, wherein one can create a cultivated refuge within a decidedly unrefined enclosure, the urban equivalent of a manicured parterre within a wild landscape. Being that the person who lives in this space works in theater, this approach allows for a series of smaller, adaptable stagings that support and augment the resident’s private and public lives.
